The opportunity to host family and friends is something that I love and was raised to enjoy because of the memories it creates. We often think back on the fun board games played, conversations on the porch with a good bottle of wine, or everyone gathering around a home-cooked meal. But, I’m sure we’ve all been in the situation, especially around the holidays when things tend to get busy, a guest’s arrival is quickly approaching and you’ve yet to prepare. I wanted to give away some quick tricks that’ll pull the décor of a room together and put you at ease.

When it comes to decorating a guest room and getting it prepared for family or friends keep in mind the overall goal is to make your guests feel comfortable and at home. The elements below can be easily applied to your home so you always have a wonderfully decorated space upon your guest’s arrival.

Tips

  • Make things visible - When preparing for a guest you want to make sure things they may need or want are easily visible. It’s always best when your guest(s) don’t have to ask for the essentials. You want to organize the items in a way to enhances the decor of the room. A few great ways you can do this is by giving them a welcome tray with snacks or their favorite candies and providing a toiletries basket in the bathroom.

Pro-Tip is to take toiletries to the next level by laying out some relaxing spa items for them to enjoy while visiting such as a bath bomb, soaking salts, some relaxing essential oils and/or some facial masks.

  • Have fresh flowers -  Taking the time for decorating a space with fresh flowers is a great way to make those you love feel welcome. Preparing a few floral arrangements in vases for the bathroom, the bedroom, and gathering spaces can add needed color and season to a room.

  • Arrange blankets - Who doesn’t like to snuggle up with the perfect comfy blanket to feel cozy and at home? Having multiple blankets displayed under welcome trays, on nightstand shelves, armoires, blanket ladders, baskets, and couches is a great way to decorate the room.

Pro-Tip is to choose different colors and textures as a great way to add another layer to the space

  • Display books -  The binding can add color, the covers add texture and when paired together they can add height or dimension to a display. When most go on vacation it’s the limited time that they have available to cuddle up with a good book. Considering a book or magazines to layout on the bed, a shelf, or nightstand that may interest your guest can be a thoughtful touch they cherish.

Pro-Tip is to consider creating a book log organizing books you’ve lent out and to whom

  • Provide a candle - The comforting scent of a candle is sure to be the cherry on the top of the trip. Adding scents based on the season, placing relaxing ones such as lavender by the tub or light clean scents for those who may be sensitive to smell can be a nice touch for the experience. If you really want to ensure you hit all five of your guest’s senses the Woodwick candle emits the sound of a crackling fire which is another great way to help your guests unwind.

Upon completing all of the steps above you’re sure to warmly welcome your guests along with all five of their senses, enhancing the memories created. I challenge you to share the different decorating touches you’ve tried that have created loving memories for your friends and family!
